Pickleheads is the #1 pickleball website, app, and community, riding the sport's meteoric rise to tremendous growth over the past year. Founder/CEO Max Ade had previously raised $1.4M from a diverse set of individual and institutional investors, and came to Metal while exploring a Seed round, with the company running ahead of industry growth benchmarks.

The Bottleneck

A fast-growing Consumer company at Seed has a specific version of a good problem: momentum creates optionality, but optionality without prioritization just becomes noise. Riding a category as hot as pickleball's growth, Max wasn't short on investor interest or a full calendar, he was short on a way to sort it. Simply identifying investors interested in a surging consumer category wasn't the constraint; the real bottleneck was understanding which of Max's existing relationships could actually produce a warm introduction to any given target, so he could prioritize trusted paths over cold outreach in a market where being able to choose which investors to work with was itself the opportunity.

Inside the Raise

Max worked in Building Access, layering his own network against Metal's data on venture deals going back 20 years:

Network Integration

Connecting Gmail and LinkedIn and adding in his existing investors gave Metal the base data to work from necessary at Seed specifically, where a founder usually has a small but real set of prior backers whose portfolios are worth mining, unlike pre-seed where that investor base barely exists yet

Intro Pathways

For each target investor, Max could see which portfolio companies of his existing investors had also raised from that target, turning a long list of desired warm intros into a specific, per-investor answer to "who do I actually message." In a fast-growing Consumer category where Max's calendar was already the constraint, this converted socializing a list into pinging specific people

Elimination Filters

Max was also able to filter out investors who don't lead Seed rounds, don't invest in consumer businesses, or hadn't backed similar technologies before, a combination that matters specifically at this Sector × Stage intersection, since "invests in tech" or "writes Seed checks" alone doesn't confirm an investor actually has conviction in consumer categories built around a specific, fast-growing niche like pickleball

These are just a few of the capabilities Max used. The same Investor Patterns search today also surfaces Content Signals, useful for a founder in a hot, fast-moving consumer category to see which investors are publicly signaling active interest right now, not just historically, and the underlying Intro Pathways mechanic also runs via Portfolio Founders and via Paths, for cases where an existing investor connection isn't the route in.

"It's not just about identifying access points; instead, it is the context provided with each intro path that makes it super useful. Prior to Metal, I had to spend hours of manual research to build a fraction of this data in spreadsheets."

The Impact

Building in a rapidly growing category with a surging user base put Pickleheads in the uncommon Seed-stage position of choosing which investors to work with, rather than chasing them. But that position only creates real value if a founder can act on it before the moment passes, consumer momentum is not a stable asset, and an investor "leaning in" today isn't guaranteed to still be leaning in once a founder has worked through a long, unsorted list by hand. What Metal changed wasn't Max's leverage, the growth had already created that it was his ability to spend that leverage quickly: knowing exactly who to ask for specific introductions and the context behind each relationship, spending time on investors already leaning in rather than earning a first call from cold ones, and narrowing to investors who actually lead Seed rounds, invest in consumer businesses, and have backed similar technologies before, rather than letting a fast-growing category's broad, opportunistic attention dictate where his limited time went.

"Prior to Metal, we relied on LinkedIn and spreadsheets to identify who can introduce us to our list of targeted investors. With Metal, we are now able to discover the right investors, and then seamlessly see where our existing investors are able to connect us."

Executive Summary

Consumer momentum is a perishable advantage, not a stable one.

Pickleheads' growth gave Max the rare seed-stage position of choosing investors rather than chasing them, but that position only holds while the momentum lasts the value was in acting on a full calendar of interest quickly, before it cooled or someone else did.

At Seed, existing investors' portfolios are the highest-leverage source of warm intros.

Unlike Pre-Seed, where a founder's investor base is too thin to mine, Max's prior $1.4M round gave him a real set of existing backers whose portfolios could be searched for shared connections to new targets.

"Writes Seed checks" and "understands this Consumer niche" are separate filters.

Eliminating investors who don't lead Seed rounds, don't invest in consumer businesses, or haven't backed similar technologies mattered specifically because none of those three facts alone confirms real conviction in a fast-growing niche category like pickleball.
