James Dorris

Founder/CEO

Odys is a sustainable aviation company building vertical take-off and landing aircraft to cut travel time in half on the world's busiest routes. With $15M+ in prior financing, Founder/CEO James Dorris had built a network with a concentration of top-tier VCs on the cap table, and came to Metal while raising the company's Seed round.

The Bottleneck

Deeptech at Seed usually means chasing capital, but a category as capital-intensive and disruptive as sustainable aviation inverts that dynamic once a founder has a strong existing cap table. Odys's problem wasn't attracting interest; the disruptive scale of the value proposition meant James was fielding significant inbound from investors during and between rounds. The bottleneck was structural to having top-tier VCs already on the cap table: those firms' portfolios are large and their founder networks deep, but knowing a firm invested in your round doesn't tell you which of their other portfolio founders could actually vouch for them or open a warm door. In Deeptech specifically, where diligence cycles are longer and investor reputation matters more before committing years of capital, that missing layer, knowing who to actually ask about an investor's process was worth more than knowing the investor existed.

Inside the Raise

James used Relationship Intelligence (Building Access), specifically the Portfolio Founders workflow, to convert his top-tier cap table into a mapped set of specific people who could vouch for or introduce him to new targets:

Connected (Green)

Portfolio founders James was directly connected to, tagged with the specific nature of the connection, valuable in Deeptech because a direct line to someone who has actually been through an investor's diligence process is a faster way to gauge fit than a cold read of a firm's stated thesis

Accessible (Orange)

Portfolio founders who'd raised from the same investor James had, tagged with that shared investor. For Odys specifically, whose existing cap table already carried a concentration of top-tier names, this tier surfaced an unusually large pool of relevant founders one hop away, a direct consequence of James's prior raise, not something every Deeptech Seed founder would see at the same scale. The mechanism generalizes (shared investors are always a legible path), but the size of the payoff here reflects Odys's specific cap table, not a Deeptech norm.

Sector and Geography Filtering

Narrowing a given investor's portfolio founders down to Odys's specific sector and geography, which in a category as narrow as sustainable aviation/advanced air mobility meant filtering a large general portfolio down to the small number of founders who'd actually understand Odys's specific technical and regulatory context

These are just a few of the capabilities James used. The same Relationship Intelligence layer today also runs via Existing Investors and via Paths/mutual connections, and pairs naturally with Investor Patterns, since a Deeptech Seed founder fielding heavy inbound benefits from qualifying which of those inbound investors actually specialize in aerospace/advanced air mobility, not just treating all interest as equally worth pursuing.

The Impact

Odys's specific advantage, a cap table already concentrated with top-tier names is not the typical Deeptech Seed starting point; most founders in this category are still working to attract that kind of capital in the first place. What generalizes from Odys's experience is narrower but still real: once a Deeptech founder does have investor relationships this valuable, the constraint shifts from access to legibility, and a category with long diligence cycles makes that legibility worth more than it would in a faster-moving sector. What had been an opaque, research-intensive process manually figuring out which portfolio founder could speak to which investor's process, became quick and repeatable for James, letting him approach new outreach with a clear, confidence-backed strategy rather than reconstructing intro paths by hand each time, a workflow that continues to surface new opportunities as Odys's fundraising needs scale with a capital-intensive category.

"Metal provides powerful functionalities to identify potential warm intros to target investors within my network. The platform ingests my network data from Gmail and LinkedIn, and then shows high-context intro pathways."

Executive Summary

A strong existing cap table shifts Deeptech's usual bottleneck from scarcity to legibility — but that starting point is Odys's, not the category's default.

Most Deeptech Seed founders are still working to attract top-tier capital; James's problem only arises once that capital is already in hand, and even then it's the long diligence cycles typical of Deeptech that make mapping those relationships worth the effort.

In a category with long diligence cycles, knowing who can vouch for an investor is worth more than knowing the investor exists.

Deeptech's multi-year capital commitments raise the cost of misjudging an investor's process, which is why a mapped, high-context intro path mattered more to James than it would in a faster-moving, shorter-diligence sector.

In a narrow category like advanced air mobility, sector filtering turns a large portfolio into a small, relevant one.

Filtering a target investor's portfolio founders by sector and geography mattered more here than in a broader category, since only a small subset of any portfolio would actually understand Odys's specific technical and regulatory context.
