Brian Freeman

Founder/CEO

Creatorland is building the professional network for the creator economy, a platform where multi-hyphenate creators build portfolios, find collaborators, and connect with brands. Brian Freeman, Founder and CEO, came to Metal while raising the company's pre-seed round.

The Bottleneck

Pre-Seed and Creator Economy is a specific combination with its own math. The pool of investors who specialize at pre-seed is a fraction of the pool at later stages, and layering a category like the creator economy on top narrows it further, plenty of generalist funds will take a meeting in this space without ever intending to lead. Brian's challenge wasn't access. Investors were willing to talk. The challenge was telling, ahead of time, which of those conversations were with someone who'd actually write the first check, versus someone curious but non-committal, inactive, or simply unfamiliar with his category.

Inside the Raise

Brian ran his search through Investor Patterns, and the five filters he stacked map directly onto the two things that make this cell, Pre-Seed, Creator Economy, harder than either dimension alone:

Fund Recency (current fund raised within the past 3–4 years)

At pre-seed, check sizes are small relative to fund size, so a fund near the end of its deployment window is more likely reserving what's left for follow-ons into its existing portfolio than for a new, unproven bet. Newer funds still building their portfolio are the ones actually positioned to write a first check into an early-stage creator economy company.

Minimum 3-Month Deal Count of 1

Creator Economy is a category a lot of generalist funds list as "of interest" without ever deploying into it, and pre-seed compounds the problem because so many self-described "pre-seed investors" are dormant at that stage specifically. This filter removes the funds that look active on paper but aren't currently writing pre-seed checks in this space.

Minimum % Portfolio Investments Marked as "Lead" at 20%

Pre-seed rounds usually need one investor willing to anchor the round before others follow, and lead-writing is rarer at pre-seed than at later stages, where more capital is in the market to fill a round without one clear anchor. This filter isolates the investors who actually do that at this stage, rather than ones who only ever follow.

Minimum % Portfolio Investments at Pre-Seed at 20%

Separates true stage specialists from generalist funds that occasionally dip into pre-seed opportunistically, which matters more in a still-forming category like Creator Economy, where opportunistic bets are common and pattern-recognition is not.

Sector Familiarity

"B2B Software" selected as the sector, with a minimum of 10 prior investments in it — because Creator Economy is broad and easy to claim familiarity with, this threshold filters out investors who've made one speculative bet in the space from those with real, repeated pattern-recognition in how creator-facing platforms actually monetize and scale.

These are just a few of the filters Brian used. The same search also surfaces Content Signals, investors publicly signaling active conviction in the creator economy right now, which matters in a category where public interest often outpaces real deployment, and Building Access, which maps a qualified shortlist like this against a founder's own network to show who can make each introduction.

The Impact

Stacking five filters at once took Brian from a broad, largely unqualified list of "pre-seed investors" to a short set of the ones statistically most likely to both lead and understand his space, replacing what would otherwise have been weeks of manual, investor-by-investor research with a single filtered view he could act on immediately.

"It's not just the investor identification that draws me to Metal, the depth and richness of data in the platform is what really matters."

— Brian Freeman, Founder & CEO, Creatorland

Executive Summary

Precision beats access at Pre-Seed.

Getting investors to take a call was never the problem, telling in advance which of those calls were with someone who'd actually lead was. That's harder in an emerging category like Creator Economy, where generalist attention often outpaces generalist commitment.

Stage and sector filter for different things, and both have to clear a real bar.

Lead-writing is the scarcer signal at pre-seed, since less capital is in the market to fill a round without one clear anchor, and sector familiarity needs a real threshold (10+ investments), since one bet in a still-forming category isn't a pattern. An investor can clear one bar and miss the other.

Stacked filters compound, especially at this intersection.

No single criterion was unusual alone, running all five together is what kept the wrong kind of "interested" investor off the list, and skipping any one at Pre-Seed × Creator Economy specifically would have let them back in.
