Founder/CEO
Headquartered in the Netherlands, Delmic builds microscopy workflows for life sciences research, with a broad set of proven applications across the field. Founder/CEO Sander den Hoedt had previously raised €6M from the European Investment Fund, the European Innovation Council, and Value Creation Capital, and came to Metal while raising the company's Seed round.
The Bottleneck
Healthcare at Seed has a scale problem that most Sector × Stage combinations don't: "Healthcare" as a category is enormous, but Delmic's actual sub-sector scientific instrumentation for life sciences research, is a narrow slice of it. Plenty of investors participate broadly in healthcare, but far fewer have real experience backing companies at Delmic's specific level of specificity. That gap is exactly where word-of-mouth breaks down: it surfaces investors who are healthcare-adjacent, not investors who understand instrumentation specifically. Sander's problem wasn't the size of the healthcare investor pool, it was that "healthcare investor" was too coarse a category to actually filter on.
Inside the Raise
Working in Investor Patterns, Sander built a systematic, two-tier definition of "sector specialist", a distinction that matters specifically because Healthcare is broad enough that parent-sector fit alone isn't a reliable signal at Seed:
Sector Specialists
Investors with more than 30 investments in Healthcare as a parent sector (configurable), establishing baseline category fluency
Sub-Sector Specialists
Investors with more than 5 investments in Instrumentation specifically (configurable), going one level deeper to isolate the far smaller pool with real pattern-recognition in Delmic's actual niche, not just healthcare broadly
Inclination to Lead
Investors who led more than a configurable X% of prior investments
Investment Activity
A minimum number of investments in the past 3 months (configurable), to confirm current deployment rather than dormant historical interest
Fund Size & Lifecycle
A fund size range plus recency of the fund's close, both configurable, to match investors sized and positioned to write a Seed check right now
Concentration by Continent
A minimum % of total investments in Europe (configurable), relevant given Delmic's Dutch base and EU-backed cap table to date
Concentration by Stage
A minimum % of total investments at Series A (configurable) — read alongside the sub-sector filter, this let Sander also surface investors positioned to lead Delmic's next round, not just this one
These are just a few of the filters Sander used. The same search today also surfaces Content Signals, investors publicly writing or speaking about life sciences instrumentation specifically, a useful check in a category broad enough that public "healthcare" enthusiasm doesn't always mean sub-sector fluency and, once a shortlist is built, Building Access maps it against Sander's own network to surface who can make each introduction.
"It's not just the investor identification that draws me to Metal, the depth and richness of data in the right-hand sidebar is critical. One of the biggest efficiency drivers is the ability to plug in my network data and then see intro pathways flowing into each investor."
—Sander den Hoedt, Founder & CEO, Delmic
The Impact
For a Healthcare Seed founder in a category this broad, the win wasn't just finding specialist investors, it was building a definition of "specialist" precise enough to survive a category as large as Healthcare. Going a level deeper than parent-sector fit, into the Instrumentation sub-sector specifically, gave Sander a genuinely higher-precision shortlist than any generic "healthcare investor list" could produce one where fit was measured against Delmic's actual niche, not the broad category it technically sits inside.
"Prior to Metal, we relied on word of mouth to identify investors that had deep familiarity with and expertise in our sector, life sciences. With Metal, we are now able to take a more systematic approach toward identifying sector specialists, the best part is that we can form our own definitions for what qualifies as a sector specialist."
— Sander den Hoedt, Founder & CEO, Delmic
Executive Summary
In a broad category like Healthcare, parent-sector fit isn't precise enough at Seed.
Delmic needed a second, narrower filter, Instrumentation specifically, at a 5+ investment threshold — because "30+ Healthcare investments" alone still left in investors with no real fluency in Delmic's actual niche.
A Seed round in a specialized sub-sector benefits from defining "specialist" yourself, not inheriting someone else's category.
Configurable thresholds across sector, sub-sector, activity, and geography let Sander build his own definition rather than rely on a generic healthcare investor list.
Stage filtering can look one round ahead.
By also screening for Series A concentration, Sander used the same search to surface investors positioned to lead Delmic's next round, not only fill this one relevant specifically because specialist investors in a narrow sub-sector are scarce enough to be worth relationship-building early.
